‘Peter Obi Not Fully Committed to African Democratic Congress ADC’ – Babachir Lawal
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has stated that Peter Obi was not fully committed to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, during his time with the party.
Lawal made the remarks on Tuesday during a Prime Time interview on Arise Television, where he spoke on recent developments within the ADC.
His comments follow Obi’s exit from the party alongside Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, both of whom cited internal disagreements and uncertainty over the party’s direction as reasons for their departure.
“We never felt his heart was in it,” Lawal said, referring to Obi’s involvement in the party.
He explained that Obi joined the coalition after it had already been established and did not fully integrate into its structure.
According to Lawal, the party leadership made attempts to accommodate the former Anambra State governor by allowing him to nominate the organising secretary, a role he described as critical to the party’s electoral processes.
He said the decision was aimed at assuring Obi of transparency within the system, although concerns about his level of commitment remained.
Lawal also suggested that Obi’s exit may be connected to his unwillingness to participate in a competitive primary election.
He maintained that the ADC is committed to ensuring a fair and open process for all aspirants, adding that the party consists of individuals with diverse political ambitions.
The former SGF also dismissed claims that his support for Obi in the 2023 presidential election signified an ongoing political alliance, noting that their relationship at the time was based on shared objectives.
He added that his political choices were guided by personal convictions rather than loyalty to any individual.
