BREAKING NEWS: Monday Okpebholo Condemns Murder of UNIBEN Undergraduate, Vows Justice
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has condemned the murder of a part-time student of the University of Benin identified as Alexander Omojiate, saying the incident is an attack on everything his administration stood for.
DAILY POST reports that the student was killed on Sunday by yet to be identified gunmen believed to be cultists.
The governor, in a statement made available to newsmen by his Chief Press Secretary, Dr Patrick Ebojele in Benin City dated May 11, 2026, described the incident as completely unacceptable.
Okpebholo explained that the brazen and cold-blooded killing on a day regarded as sacred by many is an affront to human dignity and a threat to public safety.
He extended condolences to the family, friends, and associates of the deceased, noting that his life was violently and senselessly cut short.
He, however, added that the Edo State Police Command has commenced investigations into the incident.
While assuring that the security
agencies are working around the clock to identify and apprehend all those responsible, he vowed that the perpetrators cannot hide forever.
Okpebholo who also assured the public and the family of the victim that the case would not be swept under the rug, added that the perpetrators will be found and justice will be served.
He reiterated his administration’s firm resolve to stamp out cultism in all its forms across Edo State.
“Since assuming office, the administration has taken deliberate and sustained steps to confront the cult menace head-on.
“These efforts include sustained security operations in cult-prone communities across the state, resulting in the arrest and prosecution of numerous suspected cultists.
“Close collaboration between the Edo State Government and the Nigerian Police Force, the Department of State Services, and the Nigerian Army to disrupt and dismantle cult networks operating within the state.
“Community engagement initiatives involving traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, and civil society organisations in the fight against cult violence; and strong support for the rehabilitation and reintegration of young persons vulnerable to cult recruitment.
“Edo State will not be a sanctuary for criminals. Those who carry arms and terrorise innocent people will face the full consequences of the law,” he vowed.
Okpebholo urged members of the public with useful information regarding the killing to contact the Edo State Police Command or any other security agency.
He said all information provided would be treated with the strictest confidentiality.
The governor further assured that his
government remains fully committed to securing every community and every part of the state, so that no family will have to endure the pain of losing a loved one to senseless cult violence.

ADC Alerts Public Over Sale of Nomination Forms, Beware of Fraudsters
The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has called on the public to beware of fraudulent activities relating to the sale of its nomination forms for the 2027 general elections.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said
only official channels are valid, stressing that any official communication from the National Chairman or the National Working Committee, NWC, must be issued through the National Publicity Secretary.
It also stated that any other message claiming to represent the position of the National Chairman or NWC is false, unauthorized, and a blatant lie being spread on social media without shame.
The statement also said that the sale of nomination forms for the offices of President, Governor, Senate, and House of Representatives is constitutionally vested in the office of the National Organising Secretary, adding that the sale of nomination forms for State House of Assembly is handled at the State Party Headquarters.
According to the ADC, any sale, collection, or purported authorization outside these offices is a direct violation of the party constitution and the Electoral Act process.
It added that the National Chairman and the National Working Committee conduct all party activities and affairs in the states strictly through the recognized State Party Headquarters, noting that no individual or unauthorized group has the mandate to act outside this structure.
The party warned members and the public to disregard any fraudulent messages, unauthorized agents, and fake directives circulating online, stressing that those engaging in impersonation and misinformation will be dealt with in line with the party constitution and the law.
“The attention of the African Democratic Congress National Headquarters has been drawn to a viral video circulating on social media alleging that the National Chairman, David Mark, passed a message through a fraudulent stakeholder authorizing the sale of nomination forms.
“We urge all genuine members to remain focused, law-abiding, and committed to building a united ADC ahead of 2027,” the statement said.
