Northern elders split into two groups over President Tinubu’s reforms
The Concerned Northern Elders Forum has disowned recent statements attributed to the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) on the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms.
In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by Nasir Manguno, the group said the NEF position does not reflect the true aspirations of the north.
The elders said they were compelled to speak in the interest of truth, responsibility and historical accountability, warning that remaining silent in the face of what they described as distortion would amount to complicity.
The group said the NEF’s stance against the FIRS, its executive chairman and Tinubu’s reforms does not represent the collective conscience of northern elders.
They accused the NEF of losing moral authority and becoming “a platform for political grievances and sponsored opposition narratives”.
They praised the performance of the executive chairman of the FIRS, citing consistent revenue over-performance and improved non-oil revenue mobilisation.
They said the renewed emphasis on accountability has ensured that influence no longer guarantees exemption from taxation.
On Tinubu’s economic agenda, the group said the administration inherited an economy weakened by subsidy dependence, secrecy and selective compliance.
They commended the president for choosing what they described as difficult but necessary reforms, adding that revenue reform is central to nation-building and not punitive.
The group expressed support for the memorandum of understanding signed by FIRS to strengthen inter-agency collaboration and data harmonisation.
They warned against attempts to weaponise the north against reform for partisan interests, adding that the priorities of the region remain job creation, infrastructure development, education and accountability.
“The North is not against reform. The North is against failure, and it will not be dragged backward by voices sponsored to fear progress,” the statement said.

Morocco Winners of AFCON 2025, Strips Senegal of Title
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced Morocco as winners of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The CAF Appeal Board ruled in favour of Morocco, declaring that Senegal forfeited the AFCON final by walking off the field during the game.
Morocco were awarded a 3–0 walkover victory.
This decision upholds Morocco’s appeal following the chaotic events in the match.
DAILY POST recalls that the Senegal team briefly walked off the pitch in protest after a controversial penalty was awarded to Morocco late in regulation time.
They were called back to the field by their captain, Sadio Mané, and later won the game 1–0.
CAF determined that this action constituted a violation of Article 84, or the equivalent regulations concerning refusal to play or abandoning the field.
Under AFCON rules, a team that refuses to continue playing or leaves the field without authorization faces elimination and forfeiture of the match.

A total of three operatives of different security agencies in Anambra State collapsed during the inauguration of Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, on Tuesday.
The incident happened during the parade at the Dr Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka.
The three operatives are one male police operative, another male operative of the Directorate of State Services (DSS) and a female operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC.
The police operative collapsed first, followed by the NSCDC operative, who slumped towards the end of the event and was later escorted to an ambulance, after she refused to be moved in a stretcher.
A source said the police operative was later resuscitated, but was still not stable, and was taken in an ambulance to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku Awka.
The collapse of the service officers was attributed to fatigue and the long period of parade under harsh sunny weather.
