Ibadan convention: Kabiru Turaki SAN, Former Minister of Special Duties, Elected PDP National Chairman
Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former Minister of Special Duties, has emerged as the new National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, following a highly controversial national convention held on Saturday in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The convention, which drew delegates from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, was overshadowed by sharp disagreements over zoning arrangements, accreditation delays, and alleged last-minute manoeuvres by rival factions. Security operatives were deployed in large numbers around the venue as repeated confrontations among opposing blocs threatened to disrupt the exercise.
Turaki, who became the sole candidate after the withdrawal of Lado Danmarke, the PDP’s 2023 governorship candidate in Katsina State, polled 1,516 votes to clinch the top position of the main opposition party.
In his acceptance speech, Turaki pledged to prioritise reconciliation, unity, and restructuring within the crisis-ridden party.
“We must rebuild trust and restore unity. This mandate is for the collective renewal of our great party,” he told delegates, assuring that he would reposition the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Party leaders, including governors, National Assembly members, and former National Working Committee officials, appealed to aggrieved members to accept the outcome and join hands with the new leadership. However, some factions immediately rejected the process, alleging irregularities and vowing to challenge the outcome through internal party mechanisms.
The Ibadan convention capped weeks of legal battles, as several founding members obtained court injunctions seeking to halt the event over alleged injustices in the zoning and selection processes, particularly regarding the national chairmanship.
Turaki is expected to begin consultations immediately as he moves to stabilise the PDP’s national structure and address long-standing internal disputes.

Morocco Winners of AFCON 2025, Strips Senegal of Title
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced Morocco as winners of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The CAF Appeal Board ruled in favour of Morocco, declaring that Senegal forfeited the AFCON final by walking off the field during the game.
Morocco were awarded a 3–0 walkover victory.
This decision upholds Morocco’s appeal following the chaotic events in the match.
DAILY POST recalls that the Senegal team briefly walked off the pitch in protest after a controversial penalty was awarded to Morocco late in regulation time.
They were called back to the field by their captain, Sadio Mané, and later won the game 1–0.
CAF determined that this action constituted a violation of Article 84, or the equivalent regulations concerning refusal to play or abandoning the field.
Under AFCON rules, a team that refuses to continue playing or leaves the field without authorization faces elimination and forfeiture of the match.

BREAKING NEWS: 3 security Agent Slump During Soludo’s 2nd Term Inauguration
A total of three operatives of different security agencies in Anambra State collapsed during the inauguration of Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, on Tuesday.
The incident happened during the parade at the Dr Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka.
The three operatives are one male police operative, another male operative of the Directorate of State Services (DSS) and a female operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC.
The police operative collapsed first, followed by the NSCDC operative, who slumped towards the end of the event and was later escorted to an ambulance, after she refused to be moved in a stretcher.
A source said the police operative was later resuscitated, but was still not stable, and was taken in an ambulance to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku Awka.
The collapse of the service officers was attributed to fatigue and the long period of parade under harsh sunny weather.
