Gov Yusuf’s Defection to APC Shifted, New Date Revealed

The highly anticipated defection of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been postponed.

A close ally of the governor stated that the previously scheduled date for the official defection, Monday, January 5, 2026, has now been moved to Monday, January 12, 2026.

Earlier reports had suggested that Governor Yusuf was ready to decamp to the APC on January 5.

However, a source close to the governor, who requested anonymity and was present at a meeting between Yusuf and Vice President Kashim Shettima in Abuja on Friday, revealed that the governor requested additional time.

The source explained that Yusuf intends to further consult with a few remaining state legislators and other key stakeholders who have yet to fully commit to the move.

Kano, historically a major centre of northern Nigerian politics, has in recent days been the focus of speculation surrounding the governor’s planned defection.

The development has caught many political observers by surprise, given its potential impact on the state’s political balance.
