The Nigeria Customs Service has paraded one of its officers following a viral video showing alleged extortion along the Lagos–Benin Expressway.

In the now-viral three-minute video, a motorist reportedly used Meta smart glasses to record how Customs officers stopped him on the road and allegedly extorted N200,000.

The driver maintained that his documents were valid, but the officers allegedly refused to allow him to proceed unless he made a bank transfer for alleged duty shortfalls.

Reacting to the incident, the Nigeria Customs Service immediately commenced disciplinary procedures in line with its zero-tolerance policy on misconduct.

Speaking, CSC Hussaini Abdullahi, representative of the Comptroller, FOU ‘A’, said “the service wishes to rate it that officer found capable of violating ethical standards will be subjected to appropriate sanction without compromise on behalf of the controller,” he said.

He added “Federal Operations Unit zone a controller, gi Aliu Akia by hand over the officer to the head of customs police unit in Zone A for further investigation and other necessary action.”

Taking over the officer, AC Funere William Ebi, Assistant Provost Marshal, responded: “The custom police unit in line with the directive and the mandate of the unit thorough investigation will be carried on thank you.”
