Opinion: APC Will Not Rule Forever, Likely to Go in 2027 -Former Gov El-Rufai

Published

on

Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has said the All Progressives Congress (APC) will not remain in power indefinitely, stressing that political power in Nigeria remains contestable.

El-Rufai made the statement while speaking at the 23rd Daily Trust Dialogue, themed, “Nigeria’s Fourth Republic: What Is Working and What Is Not.”

According to him, Nigeria’s democratic experience stands out on the African continent because no single party permanently controls power.

“Nigeria does not have a permanent ruling party, and that is an achievement,” El-Rufai said.

He noted that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governed Nigeria for 16 years before losing power, adding that the APC will also not rule forever.

“The PDP governed for 16 years. The APC will not govern forever. It is likely that in 2027, the APC will be gone,” he said.

El-Rufai said this reality shows that power in Nigeria remains open to competition, unlike in some African countries with dominant party systems.

“Power therefore remains contestable. This distinguishes Nigeria from dominant party systems elsewhere on the continent,” he said.

However, he added that political competition has not yet translated into good governance or accountability.

“Competition has not yet matured into accountability and good governance,” El-Rufai said.

He also noted that political parties in Nigeria remain weak, describing them as “personality-driven and transactional.”

The former governor spoke from Brussels, Belgium, where he said he was recovering from illness, and apologized for his absence from the event in Abuja.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio Breached Our Truce – Oshiomhole [VIDEO]

Published

Edo North senator, Adams Oshiomhole, has playfully called out Senate President Godswill Akpabio for breaching truce over ‘massaging women’s legs’ comment.

At plenary on Thursday, Oshiomhole said he signed a truce of no more hostilities, stating that Akpabio breached the agreement by reverting to previous matters.

DAILY POST reports that Akpabio had mocked Oshiomhole over the viral video allegedly showing him massaging a woman’s leg aboard a private jet.

The Senate President stated that the Senate initially ignored the footage because it was suspected to have been generated using artificial intelligence, AI.

Recall that a video which surfaced on X on February 3, 2026, sparked widespread reactions after it allegedly showed the former Edo State governor massaging a woman’s leg inside a private jet, days later the lawmaker debunked the video stating that it was AI.

Joking over it at the plenary, Oshiomhole said, “I want to report to this house that the senate president and I we signed a truce of no more hostilities and senate president breach the truce by reverting to previous matter, the truce stands, you should not violate, I will not violate.”

Responding, Akpabio said, “Let me first of all apologize to Oshiomhole if whatever I said could in any way injure him or feel offended.”
