The Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, has cautioned residents of Illela border town in Sokoto State against using illegal routes to travel abroad.
The warning came during a sensitisation campaign organised in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to curb migrant smuggling and human trafficking.
Speaking at the event, Assistant Comptroller of Immigration, Mukhtar Inuwa, who represented the Comptroller-General, Mrs. Kemi Nanna Nandap, urged residents to always follow due process when seeking to travel out of the country.
He warned that many Nigerians who rely on unauthorised agents in pursuit of foreign opportunities often fall victim to exploitation, forced labour, or human trafficking.
“When you follow illegal routes, you expose yourself to danger. Many people die in the desert or at sea, while others end up stranded without valid documents,” Inuwa said.
The Illela Border Command Controller, Tony Akueneme, said the command remains committed to tackling irregular migration and strengthening security along the Sokoto–Niger Republic corridor.
Also speaking, Divisional Police Officer CSP Mukhtar advised parents to educate their children on the dangers of illegal migration, noting that early awareness can help prevent such risks.
A representative of the Nigerian Army called for more cooperation between border communities and security agencies to combat cross-border crimes.
