Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu says eight people have been confirmed dead following the fire outbreak that destroyed the Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) building in Lagos on December 24, 2025.

The Lagos governor disclosed this on Friday after visiting the site of the incident, adding thatĀ five of the deceased victims have been identified, while three remain unidentified.

His words:Ā ā€œMy deepest sympathies remain with the families who lost loved ones and with everyone whose homes and businesses were affected. I know that no words can fully ease the pain they are going through.ā€

Sanwo-Olu said an information centre has been established at the site to support affected persons and provide updates.

His words: ā€œAnyone requiring assistance or information can speak with officers from LASEMA, NEMA, LASBCA, and the other responding agencies.

ā€œThe entire area remains unsafe, and no business or unauthorised activity should be taking place there. The market is closed, and only first responders are permitted on the site.ā€

He added that emergency teams were still working carefully through the debris to ensure no one remains trapped.

ā€œEmergency teams continue to work carefully through the rubble, particularly at the rear of the building, to ensure no one remains trapped,ā€ he said.

Sanwo-Olu described the incident as a reminder of the dangers associated with unsafe practices around markets.

ā€œThis tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the dangers posed by certain practices around the market,ā€ he said.

ā€œThe unsafe use of generators and the construction of shops around transformers significantly increased the risks in this area.ā€

He said the GNI building would be demolished after a full structural review, alongside some surrounding structures.

ā€œFollowing a full structural review, the GNI building will be demolished using the safest possible methods, and some surrounding buildings must also be removed,ā€ he said.

ā€œWhile these are difficult decisions, we must prioritise the safety of lives above all else.ā€

The governor said the state government would oversee the recovery process and ensure support for affected families.

ā€œMy heart is with every family affected, and I remain committed to overseeing the recovery process and ensuring we do right by our people,ā€ he said.

Morocco Winners of AFCON 2025, Strips Senegal of Title

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced Morocco as winners of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The CAF Appeal Board ruled in favour of Morocco, declaring that Senegal forfeited the AFCON final by walking off the field during the game.

Morocco were awarded a 3–0 walkover victory.

This decision upholds Morocco’s appeal following the chaotic events in the match.

DAILY POST recalls that the Senegal team briefly walked off the pitch in protest after a controversial penalty was awarded to Morocco late in regulation time.

They were called back to the field by their captain, Sadio ManĆ©, and later won the game 1–0.

CAF determined that this action constituted a violation of Article 84, or the equivalent regulations concerning refusal to play or abandoning the field.

Under AFCON rules, a team that refuses to continue playing or leaves the field without authorization faces elimination and forfeiture of the match.

A total of three operatives of different security agencies in Anambra State collapsed during the inauguration of Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, on Tuesday.

The incident happened during the parade at the Dr Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka.

The three operatives are one male police operative, another male operative of the Directorate of State Services (DSS) and a female operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC.

The police operative collapsed first, followed by the NSCDC operative, who slumped towards the end of the event and was later escorted to an ambulance, after she refused to be moved in a stretcher.

A source said the police operative was later resuscitated, but was still not stable, and was taken in an ambulance to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku Awka.

The collapse of the service officers was attributed to fatigue and the long period of parade under harsh sunny weather.
