At least three persons are feared dead following a tragic incident at River Buruku in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State, where a leisure outing reportedly turned fatal.
The incident happened on December 26, 2025, when a group of individuals visited the river for a picnic.
However, the excursion took a devastating turn, resulting in suspected drowning. Rescue and recovery efforts carried out the next day led to the retrieval of three bodies from the river.
Information circulating on social media indicated that emergency responders were mobilised to the scene, as distressing images showed an ambulance, security personnel, and a large crowd gathered along the riverbank during the operation.
River Buruku is widely known for its fast-flowing currents and has been the site of multiple drowning incidents in the past, especially during festive periods when visitors flock to the area for recreation.
Despite repeated warnings from community leaders and safety officials, the river continues to attract residents seeking leisure.
